40 Lazy Designers That Sacrificed Comfort And Safety For “Convenience”

By Liezel L

When designing your dream home, do you want it to be simple but pretty, aesthetically pleasing, or functional? Most people, of course, would choose the latter. Unfortunately, that’s not always how things go with interior design. Sometimes, builders and designers hit the nail right on the head. And then other times, they’re impeded by bad decisions that create more problems for the homeowners in the long run. There are times, too, when the homeowners themselves are part of the problem. The Instagram page Typical Rykozhop compiles all these bad interior design choices that have homeowners living with some of the ugliest, worst, and most dangerous designs available. Keep scrolling and take a look at some of the worst ones. And maybe get inspiration on what things are a big no-no when planning your own dream home.

What A Space Saver

Space in apartments is a luxury in most cities around the world. We get it. But did they really have to save space in their home this way? There must have plenty more options. At least they could have gotten a second opinion.

We understand that they wanted to make the most of the space, but they put together the place where your food starts and where it ends, and that is just not meant to be. No matter how much cleaning they do, that’ll always be gross.

The Wall Is Thicc

We love it when people try to make the best of their spaces by filling in seemingly unusable spots and giving them purpose. Unfortunately, this example didn’t hit the nail on that one. In fact, it made the entire situation worse.

For one, we all know that that washing machine is thick. For them to model the thickness of the wall to it just means they wasted so much space. And for what? It’s not particularly practical than just putting the washing machine in a corner, and it doesn’t look pleasing to the eyes.

When You DIY The Walls

Doing some work to create your dream home is a great idea. It makes the finished product a lot more special since you had a hand in doing it. We don’t think it’ll be much of a happy scene if you suddenly discover you did something terribly wrong like this.

This is why you can’t DIY your home without the right precautions. You’ll never know what’s behind your walls or where your pipes and wires might be hidden. It’s better to let the professionals do a scan first, and maybe the initial reno work before you come in.

This Is A Nightmare Come To Life

If there are two things in the house that can never be together, it’s the pipes and the outlets. Who knows when these two would start the chain reaction that would result in the death of the home of your dreams?

Whoever thought this was a good idea needs a lesson in home safety. They clearly don’t have the basics down yet, and their “handy ideas” might cost them a house, or worse, lives. Hopefully, someone rectified that situation before it got out of hand.

Taking The Long Road

It might be a little narrow, and some people might get claustrophobic with this toilet, but it works. And that’s what’s important with bathrooms. They have to work. The only problem is that nature’s call might arrive faster than you can get to that seat.

Whoever designed this must enjoy taking walks to let the food properly go down before they finally let it out onto its final resting place. That doesn’t mean everyone else does, though. But it seems that that’s their problem and not the designers’.

When They Said They Wanted Something With A Little Thrill

Usually, people set up outdoor seating to be able to enjoy the weather outside and maybe to relax in the sun. We don’t think this outdoor seating situation is entirely relaxing, especially for those who have a fear of heights.

It might have seemed like a great idea at first, since it does make good use of whatever outdoor space they had, but was it really the best idea? We don’t think so. Then again, people have different tastes. Still, they should ramp up the safety features of that thing.

3D Graffiti

Do you sometimes wonder what would happen if Spider-Man had a little too much to drink or wanted to pull a bad prank? Probably not, but here’s a funny scenario for you that can happen in that situation. He probably forgot it was even there.

Seriously though, why would anyone think cementing a bicycle to the side of a building is a good idea? It might also be an art installation, by why the single bike. Why not fill up the entire wall? We have so many questions, and we don’t think we’re getting any answers.

This Is Sims Logic

If you’ve ever played any video games, you’d know that there are sometimes glitches when parts of characters or objects get randomly sucked into walls, ceilings, or whatnot. It’s known as clipping, and this shower head is a perfect example of that.

But this isn’t from a Sims game, no. This is from the real world. And whoever installed that probably was too lazy to just go back to the store and get a new shower head, so they just cemented in what they got.

The Wire Maze

This picture is the exact representation of our brains when we’re had too much work to do and too much to think of. At that point, our brains are on the brink of self-destruction, much like these wires probably are.

At least our brains are contained in an appropriate “enclosure.” These wires, though, have all the potential problems and then some. And we’re not sure which of them bothers us more: the fact that they look lethal or that they’re not flush with the wall.

This Is Called The Weeping Shower

The shower is a sacred place. It’s where many of us do our most profound and most concentrated thinking. Sometimes though, we need a shower for those moments when all we want to do is act like a drama queen and weep under the running water. And it seems like someone has a solution for that.

It’s not too low that the water feels like nothing, and it’s not too high that it feels weird when you sit. So people of all heights can enjoy the moment and just pour out their emotions under the running water. Who doesn’t want that?

It’s Called Art

We know a lot of people love solar power. After all, it’s a cleaner energy source than gasoline or coal. But isn’t this just going a bit overboard? It’s like an entire satellite just landed and stuck to the roof of this house.

At first glance, we thought something collapsed on this person’s roof. But nope. It’s just a really bad installation. And since no one seems to have objected to the way it was set up, we think it’s also partly the product of lousy design taste.

DIY Flat Screen TV

Flat-screen TVs are a symbol that you’re living comfortably. It’s also like this reminder that you’re catching up with modern times. But what about when you can’t afford one? Well, this person has found a way and made their own.

Instead of mourning the absence of a flat-screen TV, they made their very own unique one. They seem to be forgetting how those old TV models can quickly overheat. But who cares about home safety when you are living in luxury?

Just Cramming Everything In There, Aren’t They?

Do you remember those scenes in cartoons where a hair dryer or a toaster falls into the bathtub and a character gets electrocuted to the point their skeletons show? Imagine that, but think bigger. Maybe this picture can help you out.

They really just crammed everything in there without fear for their life, didn’t they? Sure, it kind of works, but will they risk waiting for the day when everything goes wrong? Or will someone knock some sense into them before it gets that far?

Fill In The Blanks

The corners of our homes don’t seem like such a big deal, but they actually are. Just take a look at this. Once you see it, it won’t leave your mind. It’s like a ghost that’ll haunt your dreams and never let you forget it.

Don’t worry, though. Unlike other failed designs on this list, this one is just unfinished. There’s still a piece that’s supposed to go on that gap and cover up that ugly part. If the homeowner just left it as is, then that’s just a bad design choice.

Toe Stubs Guaranteed

Just imagine stubbing your toe every time you try to go to the bathroom. That’s just unfortunate, but that’s what you’ll get with this toilet. The only good thing about this is the water-saving pipes that use sink’s greywater to flush the toilet.

Still, there could have been so many other ways to fix that drain situation to make it safer and aesthetically appealing. And there are plenty of ways where the outcome doesn’t involve the risk of you tripping before you can relieve your most dire need.

Our Body Just Hurts Looking At These

First of all, what in the world are these and why? We get that clean, shiny tiles bring a certain appeal to certain areas of the house, but that doesn’t apply to furniture, especially the ones you’re supposed to feel relaxed on.

Whoever decided on this design must be a sadist because all we can feel from this picture is pain. We can already feel the cold butts, stubbed toes, broken bones, and backs screaming for cushions. This better just be an art piece.

Making Use Of The Very Last Nooks And Corners

In today’s world, space is costly, and that’s why every square inch of vacant space in a house is valuable. That’s also why people try their best to make good use of every nook and cranny of their home, just like these people.

We’re not sure it’s the best choice to put a light switch there, though. Can you imagine all the spiders or the cockroaches hiding in there, just waiting for a hand to reach in? Or worse, another hand reaching through like a scene from a horror movie!

Red Or Blue?

Home repairs can be quite the headache, especially if you’re unsure what you’re doing and you have no one to help. But they can be more frustrating when you’re facing something like this where you basically have to play a guessing game.

Is it the right one? Is it the red one at the top? Who knows? You probably won’t know until you’ve turned every knob and disrupted all your neighbor’s activities. So it’s only fitting that whoever set this up should also be responsible for the repairs, right?

6 Out Of 10 For Trying

You can be called a truly independent person if you’ve learned to do things around the house. If you’re like some of us, though, who have little idea on how to do even basic home repairs, then you might end up with a project like this once or twice.

This just goes to show that not everyone is cut out for this kind of work. They can try, but the results won’t always be acceptable enough to be kept. Besides, professionals exist for a reason, so it’s best to make use of their talents and skills.

When You Can’t Find The Right Door Fit

While we’d normally consider a door to be standard, you’ll likely notice that styles have changed over the years. Sadly, not everyone loves the classics, so plenty of people tried modernizing those old doors. But It didn’t always turn out to be the best decision.

Just look at this example. It’s like we can hear the ghost of some 19th-century carpenter screaming because the people who did that basically destroyed a masterpiece twice without any remorse. It’s disappointing that they couldn’t find a way to preserve a beautiful thing like that.

Camouflage At Its Finest

Recently, people have been loving incorporating themes into their interior design. Often, this involves having your parts of your home match paint colors, textures, and the like. And the aim of this is to create a neat and stylish uniform look around the house.

Sadly for this toilet, they missed the point of actually making it look nice. Instead, they made it look cheap. And it looks like something you’ll find in places where people don’t actually care about the look of the toilet as long as there’s a hole to relieve themselves in.

Surprise In The Dark

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and getting a 50 percent chance of getting to the bathroom and successfully peeing or getting a 50 percent chance of getting electrocuted and having your pee end up on the floor.

That’s where this door handle/light switch/outlet situation puts you. But whoever planned this might have been teaching a life lesson — to be prepared for whatever life throws your way. We’re not sure it’s the best way to hand out advice, though.

Someone’s Sending A Message

We don’t know how determined this person was at making their intent clear, but they were sending a message with that design choice alright. And that message is to not stand when you pee. That or contort yourself to pee the way you like.

Clearly, the person in the picture isn’t getting it. Then again, maybe the message could have been a little bit clearer. Other people would just ignore that obstacle and actually make the situation worse by peeing on the floor or the tub.

The Best Way To Give Your Plumber A Headache

Every time a plumber comes into the room to see this, they probably take a deep breath and try to control their anguish or anger at the mess before them. They also probably gear themselves up with a rubber suit just in case.

It just takes one accident, and all those pipes can simultaneously break. And when that happens, the plumber who’s been handed the job of fixing them is going to be in for a troublesome few hours. We feel for them. Hopefully, they get compensated enough for it.

A Perfect Wake-Up Call

There are mornings when not even a dozen cups of coffee or the loudest alarm clocks can wake us up. Those days, we need a good boink on the head. If that’s the kind of morning wake-up call you need, this low-hanging cabinet situation might be perfect for you.

Whoever designed and built this really care if the homeowner was able to see what they were doing at the sink or not. Or they might have been thinking of only a certain height range like maybe something below 5’2″.

Expert Way Of Hiding The Wires

Nowadays, most people like their homes to look neat and organized, so visible wires are just a no-no. And we get it. Tangled-up wires in a corner are just not an aesthetic anyone wants. Whoever put up these wires, though, seems to be getting at something.

Now, the curvy method they used it might not be the best, but the sentiment is there. They didn’t want to destroy the brick wall, so they followed the grout. After that, they can just cover it up with more grout and voilà, no ugly wires in sight.

Have To Make It Fit

Remember those kid toys where you have to fit objects to the shapes they corresponded to? Some kids would just try to shove things into the wrong holes no matter what you tell them. This is exactly like that, but it’s not a game.

The person who did this clearly didn’t see the wall as an obstacle to their desire to have a toilet lid. They just had to have it no matter what, even if it wasn’t complete, or else it would just ruin everything. At least they got their wish.

Find The Real One

There are already enough confusing things out there in the world, and surely, we don’t need any more additions like this one, right? This setup doesn’t make sense, and it will bother people all day long, not to mention those that need to walk by frequently.

What we think happened here is somebody just dropped a bunch of these on some wet cement, and they got embedded in there. Also, nobody seemed to have a problem with it, so they just left it at that. At least, that’s our theory.

Who Does This Kind Of Work?

Someone saw the empty space above the bathtub and thought, “Ah, that’s the perfect spot for the sink!” And you know what? Their idea kind of works. It’s not dangerous, and it’s not technically wrong. It’s just a little bit of wonky positioning.

If you think about it, it’s actually a great space-saving solution, especially for those who really have tiny bathrooms. Plus, you can even set up your very own waterfall bath here. Just don’t slip in the bathtub, or that sink might be the end of you.

When You Have A Throne To Look Over The Kitchen From

There’s a lot to unpack in this picture. First, there’s the comfort room that looks like a throne which the homeowners use to guard their cooking. Then, there are the tiny stairs leading to the toilet. Finally, there’s the tiny bathtub right across from the stove.

At first, it looked fine. After all, the toilet at least had some separation from the kitchen, right? And then we saw the bathtub. What’s the idea behind that? Do the homeowners want to enjoy their bubble bath while cooking up dinner? Please explain.

When The Plugging And Unplugging Won’t Depend On You

People do strange stuff all the time, but we just don’t understand this one. If they wanted to keep the wire steady and plugged all the time, there are so many other ways to do that, yet they went for the most unconventional and impractical method.

Just imagine if one wall belonged to one house and the other to another house. That would cause a lot of plugging and unplugging problems. It might even start a war if a treaty isn’t signed over that strange wire and plug deal.

Just Missed It!

People who hate it when things aren’t just perfectly aligned might just lose it over this design choice. Seriously, the people who installed those pipes missed the most satisfying alignment for that by a few inches. In fact, they probably wasted the pipes with this setup.

If they measured it right, they would’ve been able to position it properly. So it would either have been that their measuring instruments had something wrong with them or that they were doing it on purpose to mess with people. Hopefully, it isn’t the latter.

Remember To Wash Your Hands

Now, for this one, we don’t really think it’s a design fail. In fact, it’s actually a pretty neat concept because it will always remind people to wash their hands before heading out of the toilet. Plus, it’s a perfect way to save water.

Then again, we do see the issue here. There’s just something strange about putting two things that look alike with different purposes together. People can get easily confused, you know? And if that happens, that would defeat the idea behind this design.

A Unique Way Of Sending A Message

Have you ever wanted to give your landlord a message the old-fashioned way, like with a paper and pen? Well, here’s a unique idea for you: your very own personal chute to the landlord. Although, we’re not sure that’s what these people used that for.

We’re not even sure if that still works but they could have covered it up a little bit better. Did they just run out of plaster? It’s distracting, and the way they covered it up doesn’t look like it will be of much use either.

When They Took The Name “Water Closet” A Little Too Literally

Before the 19th century, people didn’t have indoor plumbing. When it started becoming more common, people had to make room for toilets. And they found that one of the best spots for it is in the closet, which makes sense given its size and shape. So people remodeled their closets and called their toilets the water closet.

As it seems, the designers of this toilet were just trying to model it after those old toilets. Now, the smell of mothballs won’t be the only smell coming out of their closets anymore. It does make us wonder what is behind those other doors, though.

Helping People Get Their 10,000 Steps In

This one isn’t on the architect, but on the lazy employee in charge of clearing the walkway. Like all of us, it seems like they had one of those days that their brain gave up halfway through the task at hand.

The person in charge of shoveling the sidewalk was doing so well, but then something went wrong. We wonder if there was even a reason why they took a detour? It must not have been a safety issue because we can see that pedestrians preferred to stop through the snow instead of taking the long way around.

Unfinished Business

A lot of us wish that we live in a world where useless emails don’t exist, where coworkers aren’t annoying, and where people actually get the job assigned to them done. But alas, we don’t. And sometimes, this is the kind of work we end up with.

It would have been a little bit okay if the unfinished task was barely noticeable, but no. They chose not to be discreet about their unfinished work. Maybe they ran out of budget at the very last minute? Or maybe they just hated the job so much they just quit? Who knows?

It’s The Placement

At first glance, there seems to be nothing wrong. There’s a proper drain; it’s not dirty, and the tiles were actually done right. The way they’re placed creates a slight angle towards the drain meaning the water will drain effectively. It’s also very neat. The problem is the drain placement.

If they only nudged it to the left a little bit more and upwards a few centimeters, then it would have been perfect. It would have been so satisfying to see. But sadly, it seems that the plumber and the tile guy weren’t working together, so they ended up with this.

Turn The Lights Down

Someone probably said, “How about you turn the lights down a bit?” to the wrong person, and this disaster is what they ended up with. And, well, they’re not wrong; the lights are indeed down. A little too low, actually.

Before anyone starts a riot, though, the homeowners weren’t seriously just going to place their chandelier on top of their table. It’s just unfinished. Just imagine if they did leave it at that, though. It would be like entering a home from Alice In Wonderland.

They Got It Upside Down

Sometimes, when a design is a little complicated, it’s easy to make mistakes. And that’s okay. There will always be a level of difficulty to anything. But this — we don’t even know how to start to explain. How could anyone get it this wrong?

Everyone knows how water works on the most basic level, right? It’s pretty simple and yet, here’s this person or people who built this strange drain that defeats its purpose. They might have had great plans for it, but their execution stinks.
